As of my knowledge cutoff in September 2021, the whale shark (Rhincodon typus) holds the title of the largest shark species and the largest fish in the ocean. However, it’s worth noting that the sizes of individual sharks can vary, and there may be larger specimens that have been discovered since then. The size of the largest recorded whale shark was around 40 feet (12 meters) in length. It’s always possible that new, exceptionally large sharks could be found in the future, as our understanding of marine life continues to evolve with ongoing research and discoveries.
